NAR Code of Ethics and Fair Housing Training
Building Trust Through Professionalism and Equal Opportunity
The REALTOR® name represents more than just a license. It stands for a commitment to professionalism, integrity, and fairness in every real estate transaction.
As a member of the Elkhart County Board of REALTORS®, you are required to complete both the National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics training and Fair Housing training to remain in good standing and to serve your clients with excellence.
These foundational courses are more than requirements. They are a reflection of your dedication to ethical practices and your responsibility to protect equal access to housing in our communities.
NAR Code of Ethics Training
All REALTOR® members must complete the Code of Ethics training once every three-year cycle as mandated by the National Association of REALTORS®. This training reinforces the REALTOR® commitment to conduct business honestly, protect clients’ interests, and work cooperatively with other professionals. New members are required to complete NAR’s New Member Code of Ethics Course within 30 days of application.
Training is available in a variety of formats, including online courses through NAR and live sessions offered by ECBOR or other approved providers. You will receive reminders from ECBOR when your next cycle deadline is approaching to ensure you stay compliant. The Code of Ethics training covers topics such as:
- Duties to clients and customers
- Duties to the public and the law
- Duties to other REALTORS®
- Real-world examples of ethical dilemmas and how to resolve them
- The structure and enforcement process of the Code
Fair Housing Training
Fair Housing training is a required component for new REALTOR® members and an essential resource for all agents who want to uphold the principles of equal opportunity in housing.
This course teaches you to identify discriminatory practices, understand protected classes under the law, and serve every client with respect and fairness.
Fair Housing is not just a legal obligation. It is a commitment to equity and inclusion that builds trust in our communities and improves the future of real estate for everyone. Key topics in Fair Housing training include:
- The history and purpose of Fair Housing laws
- Federal, state, and local protected classes
- Avoiding discriminatory advertising or steering
- How to respond to violations and file complaints
- Creating inclusive marketing and service practices
